On March 28th 2009 Emily received the best birthday present of her life when she found out that she and her husband Kevin would be expecting their first child. Some might have thought that this meant a graceful end to her successful career as a professional wakeboarder. They thought wrong. After sitting out for the past year Emily is back and more determined than ever to not just be competitive again…but to win. Nautique got the chance to sit down with Emily, Kevin, and their baby girl Hope to talk about the road to getting back on the water, her new intense training regimen, and her plans for this upcoming season.
Nautique- Emily, what was your first reaction when you found out that you were pregnant right before the start of the season last year?
Emily- I was really excited about the pregnancy and even though I wouldn’t be able to compete in 2009 I felt so ready to be a mom that I wasn’t disappointed. To me, having a baby was the best thing in the world and still is.
Nautique- How do you like living back in Colorado compared to Orlando?
Emily- There are pros and cons to each of them. I miss the warm weather, friends, and all the lakes in Orlando. But I love being close to my family in Denver and the snowboarding isn’t so bad either
Nautique- How has Hopes arrival changed your life personally and as an athlete?
Emily- It has changed everything in my life! I have never loved anyone the way that I love her. And it has totally changed the focus from “me” to taking care of her. But I wouldn’t want it any other way. As far as the athlete side of me… I am ready to get back to where I was physically and I am finding it does take a little bit of time and a lot of work, but I feel like Hope has given me even more motivation than I had before and I know that I can do it.
Nautique- What are your plans for this season?
Emily- My plans are to compete at all of the contests and to ride as much as I can. I would love to learn a few new tricks and to ride even better than I was before.
Nautique- We’ve heard that you are on a new intense training program with Shaun Murray right now. Tell us about that.
Emily- Well, it is top secret… j/k. We are just riding a lot and trying to get the mental side of things under control, as well as learning some new tricks with him. Shaun has his Nautique 230 really dialed in so working on new tricks has been fun. He is such a great coach and a close friend of mine, so I really enjoy riding with him. (I hope he feels the same)
Nautique- You and Kevin have started a new action sports ministry that has been gaining a lot of momentum lately and we’ve heard rumors of big things to come from that. How are things going and what can we expect to see from This Iz My Story?
Emily- Yes, this is very exciting for us and you can expect to see more athletes’ stories on the website (like Bethany Hamilton). We are also so excited to be doing a documentary on Eric Gator Lutgert that will be premiering at the Wake Games this coming April. There are so many cool things happening and so many more to come.
