Guatemala – Nautique Cares
Nautique team in Guatemala
Bunk bed built by Nautique team in Guatemala
I am writing this Nautique Insider with mixed emotions as I sit in the Guatemala City airport getting ready to leave Central America. While I am happy to be going home, I will also miss spending time with an incredible group of Nautique employees who have spent the past four days trying to make a positive difference in our world.
This year’s Nautique mission trip to Guatemala follows past trips we have taken, since 2007, to Mexico (twice) and Nicaragua. This summer our team decided to go somewhere new in an effort to help the “track people” of Guatemala City.
The track people of Guatemala City are families who have settled on abandoned railroad tracks. They live in significant poverty. Many of their homes have dirt floors and when it rains the piecemeal roofs leak. However, despite their poverty, the track people also seem to have a real sense of family and community. Children run all over the place, in and out of each others’ homes, and love to see visitors. The adults are very sweet and kind and really appreciated our group coming to help them.
One of my jobs on the trip was to carry to the houses materials that our team was using to build bunk beds for the families. It was an indescribable feeling to see the joy on the faces of the children as I walked into their homes carrying a few pieces of wood. It was like Christmas to them, many times over.
Our team worked really hard on this trip and we are now going home tired. Our team also knows we were serving people who will never be able to pay us back; however, everyone of us would do it again in an instant and we are already looking forward to next year’s trip!
Also, this past weekend while we were in Guatemala, another group of Nautique employees and athletes partnered with the Orlando Watersports Center (OWC) to treat a group of inner city kids to a spectacular weekend of fun. The group took the kids out on Nautique boats, gave wakeboarding demonstrations and lessons, and treated them to an incredible lunch.
I am proud of our Nautique team. Our team is made up of people who not only build the world’s best boats but also care about making a positive difference in our world.
To us the Nautique life includes not only exciting time on the water but also time spent giving back. We hope to make a positive difference…
Enjoy the Nautique life!
